Recovering from Ivan – a Partner Success Story from the Cayman Islands
When Hurricane Ivan hit the Cayman Islands in early September of 2004, the devastation affected nearly 90 percent of island homes on the wealthy offshore finance centre of 45,000 people. The category 5 storm’s 165-mph winds and two-story waves also caused significant damage to the Islands’ business community, destroying storefronts, offices and especially technology infrastructure.
Many businesses are still in the process of recovering from Ivan, but thanks to companies like Ontrack Data Recovery, some recovery efforts were underway immediately. For Ontrack partner Cyberbiz, making a connection with onsite Ontrack engineers meant the ability to offer their clients the advanced data recovery service those customers desperately needed to get their companies back in operation.

Improving Disaster Planning
Business continuity planning is a topic that has taken on increased importance in the past year. This is evidenced by an InformationWeek survey that had 80 percent of 300 respondents say business-continuity plans are in good enough shape to ensure operations continue even in the event of a terrorist attack. However, 70 percent still say that business-continuity planning or disaster preparedness as a key priority this year.

Restore and Rejoice – Simple Instructions for Completing your Recovery
The lost data was successfully recovered and your customer is elated with the results. Their business was saved and they are in celebration mode – but there is one step left to making sure they experience complete satisfaction, restoring the recovered information from the returned media.
When your customers receive their recovered data on CD or DVD media, it’s important that they follow the restore instructions, which are also available at www.ontrack.co.uk/restore.
Preparation
Before attempting to restore recovered data (regardless of the Operating System), your customer’s system should meet the following criteria:
-
System is bootable
- Operating system installed
- Enough free space on the system to hold the data to be restored
- Software applications installed
Restoring Data
The Ontrack Data Recovery Tech Support team is available at postdatarecovery@ontrack.com to help you with your customer’s data restoration (but please complete the Preparation step before calling Tech Support). If you are not sure which set of instructions to use when restoring data, please refer to the CD that was sent - the file system is printed on the label.
Complete restore instructions are available at www.ontrack.co.uk/restore for the following operating systems:
-
WINDOWS 95/98/2000/XP/NT4
-
DOS / Windows 3.1x / NetWare
- UNIX TAR
- UNIX CPIO
- MAC
Ontrack can now provide recovered data on another type of media – USB hard drives. In that case, a copy process is a normal Windows procedure.
Ontrack Technical Support assistance provides directions for simple importing or opening the restored data into the new system. For example, MS Outlook PST importing, Quicken or QuickBooks file opening and other common file types. Proprietary procedures for importing data, not obvious to Technical Support or users, may require support from that proprietary software provider.
